The Art of Immersion - Why Do We Tell Stories? →
“Under its influence, a new type of narrative is emerging, one that’s told through many media at once in a way that’s nonlinear, participatory and above all, immersive. This is “deep media”: stories that take you deeper than an hour-long TV drama or a two-hour movie or a 30-second spot will permit.”
Susan Blackmore - Memes and “Temes” (TED, 2008)
Evolution = Design from Chaos without the Aid of the Mind.
Mimeme = That which is imitated.
Imagine a world of brains, and far more memes than can possibly find homes. The memes are trying to get copied. We are the meme-machines.
You get an arms race between:
- The genes which are trying to get the humans to have small economical brains and not waste their time copying all this stuff
and
- The memes themselves (like the sounds that people made and copied, which turned out to become language) competing to get the brains to get bigger and bigger.
All other species on this planet are gene-machines only. We are gene machines and meme machines. But that’s not all we new kinds of memes now.
I do honestly think we need a new word now for technological memes, let’s call them techno-memes or “temes,” because the processes are now different.
So we’re at this cusp now, of having a third replicator on our planet.
Don’t think intelligence. THINK REPLICATORS!

—Commercial at the end poses an interesting question as well.

!!!! Orientalism wont just change the way you look at Western Society’s interpretation of eastern/middle-eastern culture, it will change the way you understand Western Society’s understanding of “The Other.” From that point Western relationships with post-colonial regions are much more easily understood.
Thanks @fuckyeahhistorycrushes for posting this.
Behold the sexiness of the late Edward Said (1935-2003)! Sociologist, Palestinian rights activist, and post colonial theorist.
Born in a Jerusalem that was then part of the British Mandate of Palestine, he was born into a prosperous Palestinian-Christian family who owned property in Cairo and was therefore not as affected when Israel was created as a state under UN declaration in 1948 and the Arab League declared war. This disinheritance would later affect his theories on Orientalism in Post Colonial Political and Social Theory. During his lifetime, Robert Fisk would describe him as “the Palestinian’s most powerful political voice”.
Strong winds expected to return after brief reprieve Sunday:
The northeast winds across the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties are forecast to diminish gradually throughout Sunday morning. But strong winds are likely to gather again by late Sunday night and continue through Tuesday afternoon.
